Cellist Chul Hur entered and graduated from
the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts as the youngest top student
and studied under world-renowned maestro Wolfgang Boettcher, former principal
cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic, and Boris Pergamenschikow. Later, he was
selected by Gustav Rivinius of the Saarbrücken University of Music and
graduated with unanimous top honors in the highest performer course. During his
studies, he consecutively won awards at the Lichen Cello International
Competition, Brahms International Competition, Vittorio International
Competition, and Gizeking Competition, building his reputation in Europe. He
demonstrated his prowess by being a semi-finalist at the Rostropovich and
Munich International Competitions and successfully replaced the ailing Boris
Pergamenschikow in a trio with world-renowned clarinetist Eduard Brunner and pianist
Hartmut Höll at the Stuttgart Liederhalle, which led to regular performances
with global musicians. His partners include flutist Roswitha Staege, pianist
Hartmut Höll, violinist Christian Tetzlaff, cellist Gustav Rivinius, Boris
Pergamenschikow, clarinetist Eduard Brunner, the Artis Quartet, and the
Amarillis Quartet.
He was selected as a scholar of Germany's
Villa Musica and collaborated with maestros such as Thomas Brandis, Ingo
Goritzki, Dirk Janssen, Wolfram Christ, and the Demenga brothers. He has
performed as a guest cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic, Stuttgart Radio
Symphony Orchestra, Freiburg Baden-Baden Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the
Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra. He has been invited to perform as a
soloist and chamber musician in New York, LA, Madrid, Barcelona, Berlin,
Vienna, Stuttgart, Munich, Prague, Budapest, Stockholm, Salzburg, Paris, and
Rome. After returning to Korea, he has been active as a soloist and chamber
musician, performing approximately 70 concerts annually and served as the
principal cellist of the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has also been a guest principal for the
Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Busan Philharmonic Orchestra, Daejeon
Philharmonic Orchestra, Cheongju Philharmonic Orchestra, Gwacheon Philharmonic
Orchestra, and Eurasian Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a member of the Ensemble
TIMF, Korea Festival Ensemble, Ensemble Yulim, Seoul Soloists Cello Ensemble,
and Hwaum Chamber Orchestra. He has been invited to perform at the Romania Bacau
Music Festival, Darmstadt International Music Festival, Hong Kong International
Arts Festival, Belgium Clara Festival, Salzburg International Music Festival,
Münster International Music Festival, and Warsaw Autumn in Poland.
Additionally, he has been invited to perform as a soloist with the Seoul
Philharmonic Orchestra, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Cheongju Philharmonic
Orchestra, Chungnam Provincial Symphony Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic
Orchestra, Eurasian Philharmonic Orchestra, Gangnam Symphony Orchestra, Seoul
Tutti Orchestra, Ensemble TIMF, London Sinfonietta, Munich Chamber Orchestra,
Sarabia Symphony, New Budapest Symphony, and Collegium Musicum Saar.
Currently, he is an invited professor at
Gangnam University and a guest principal of the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra
and Cheongju Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a member of the Ensemble TIMF,
Korea Festival Ensemble, Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, Seoul Soloists Cello
Ensemble, and plays a 1730 Carlo Bergonzi cello.
