Violinist Ji Yeon Ryu graduated from Yewon
School, Seoul Arts High School, and Seoul National University, and then went to
the United States, where she earned a master's degree from the Eastman School
of Music and a doctoral degree from Florida State University. After making her
debut on the domestic stage while attending Yewon School, she held a solo
recital as a Kumho Young Artist while studying at Seoul National University.
During her doctoral studies, she won the Concerto Competition and served as
concertmaster of the University Symphony Orchestra. During her master's and
doctoral programs, she was awarded an Assistantship Scholarship and a full
scholarship during her doctoral program. she received a special scholarship
from the dean and served as an assistant to Beth Newdome. Her doctoral
dissertation, "Musical Borrowing in Contemporary Violin Repertoire,"
was selected as an outstanding thesis by ProQuest, an American academic
research information service, and was published and used as study material
throughout the United States. After returning to Korea, Ji Yeon Ryu has
continued to be active both domestically and internationally, performing
recitals in Yokohama and Tokyo and donating all proceeds to earthquake-affected
areas. She has held recitals in Korea at venues such as the Seoul Arts Center,
Kumho Art Hall, Seocho Art Hall, Buam Art Hall, Maria Callas Hall, and others.
She has also collaborated with orchestras such as the FSU Symphony in the
United States, Seoul National Symphony, Seoul Art Orchestra, Millennium Ensemble,
Nirvana Orchestra, JK Ensemble, and Grand Guitar Ensemble.
She served as a guest concertmaster of the Albany Symphony Orchestra and associate concertmaster of the North Florida Symphony Orchestra in the United States. In Korea, she has served as concertmaster of the Clano Philharmonic Orchestra, guest concertmaster of the Incheon Opera Company, Seoul Pro Musica, and Nirvana Orchestra. She is currently teaching at Soongsil University, Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, Sunhwa Arts Middle School, Sunhwa Arts High School, and the Seoul Arts Center Gifted Academy. She is also an active member of the Ensemble TIMF, Erato Ensemble, JK Ensemble, and Ensemble Creo.
