Violinist Seok Jung Lee began playing the
violin at the Juilliard Pre-College in the United States and returned to Korea
to enter Yewon School and then Seoul Arts High School as the top student. He
later attended the Korea National University of Arts, where he graduated with
degrees in arts and professional performance, and then went back to the U.S. to
complete his master's (M.M) and Artist Diploma (A.D) at Yale University with
full scholarships from the Harry B. Jepson Scholarship and the Irving S.
Gilmore Scholarship. Early in his career, he won numerous awards in
competitions such as those organized by JoongAng Ilbo, Hankook Ilbo, Chosun
Ilbo, and Ewha Kyunghyang. He began gaining attention after winning the grand
prize in the string section at the overseas dispatch competition organized by
the Korea Music Association.
As a soloist, he has collaborated with the
KBS Symphony Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, Jeonju Philharmonic
Orchestra, Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean Soloists, Bulgaria's Varna
Symphony Orchestra, and KNUA Symphony Orchestra. He has held solo recitals as
an artist selected by Kumho Art Hall and the Lee Won Cultural Foundation,
showcasing a diverse repertoire to critical acclaim from audiences.
Seok Jung Lee has also been active in
various performances. In 2013, he participated in the 60th-anniversary concert
of the Korea-U.S. alliance organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
performing at Avery Fisher Hall in New York's Lincoln Center, the Kennedy
Center in Washington, and the Ford Theatre in L.A. He was invited to perform at
the 'Ongoing Harmony 130 years of US-Korea Relations' event organized by the
National Brand Committee of Korea at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in
Washington. As a member of the Sejong Soloists, he performed at the closing
concert of the Seoul International Music Festival and participated in domestic
tours. As a guest of the Kanazawa Ensemble in Japan, he performed at Suntory
Hall in Tokyo, the International Forum Hall, Symphony Hall in Osaka, and
Kenritsu Bunka Center. He performed at the opening concert of the Tongyeong
International Music Festival in 2006, participated in the 6.15 National
Unification Festival in Pyongyang, and gave a recital at the invitation of the
Swiss Embassy in Korea. He has also performed chamber music at Carnegie Zankel
Hall in the U.S., Rachmaninoff Hall in Moscow, and Koryu Hall in Ishikawa,
Japan, among others, engaging in numerous performances both domestically and
internationally.
As an orchestra leader, Seok-Joong Lee served as the concertmaster of the KNUA Orchestra and the Albano Ballet Festival Orchestra in the U.S. He also performed as a guest concertmaster for the New York Classical Symphony Orchestra. After returning to Korea, he has been actively involved as a guest concertmaster for the Seongnam Philharmonic Orchestra, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra, and Jeonju Philharmonic Orchestra. Currently, he is a member of the Ensemble TIMF, concertmaster of the Seoul Tutti Ensemble and Ditto Orchestra, leader of the Avec String Quartet, and Ras Ensemble. He is also a full-time professor at Inje University.
